Farol Seafaring Knives
After a trip to the Azores that Sylvain Berthommé got the idea to create a knife for sailors and on a
broader scale for travellers in general. Impressed by the fact that whale hunting was still practised in the
Azores islands up until only a few years ago, Sylvain decided to give his first knife the shape of the huge
toothed sperm whale.
This knife naturally took the form of a sperm whale, hunted long ago in the Azores. Now Sylvain and his
team can be found in his workshop in the old fish market of La Rochelle.
The idea was to invent a different type of knife from that used in mountain areas. This knife has adopted
the spirit of the sea. The workshop of Farol is located in an ancient part of the antique fish market of
LaRochelle, called ‘ENCAN’ by the locals. The name ENCAN is also the name of one of our knives, light and
yet strong, a simple folding knife with an original strong locking system.
